In Germany, CIC energiGUNE scientist María Arnaiz honored with «POLiS Award for Excellence for Women Researchers.»

Posted on julio 13, 2023julio 8, 2023 by AINHOA LÓPEZ-ABADÍA URRESTI

The prestigious «POLiS Award for Excellence for Women Researchers» not only recognizes her professional accomplishments but also comes with financial support of up to 70,000 euros for research stays in institutions within the ‘Post-Lithium’ Energy Storage Cluster of Excellence. In her lecture, Arnaiz shared insights into her career and highlighted her work on pre-metallation strategies and the scaling up of multilayer cells.

María Arnaiz, a researcher at CIC energiGUNE, a leading Basque research centre in electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage and conversion and hydrogen technologies, has been awarded the prestigious ‘POLiS Award for Excellence for Women Researchers’ by the ‘Post-Lithium’ Energy Storage Cluster of Excellence. The cluster, consisting of renowned German institutions working on alternative storage technologies to lithium, annually recognizes outstanding female researchers in the field. Dr. Arnaiz expressed her gratitude, considering the award as recognition for her past achievements and future endeavors. The award includes up to €70,000 for research stays at participating institutions to foster international collaborations.

Dr. Arnaiz received the award during the POLiS Annual Meeting held in Ulm. She also delivered a lecture on her professional journey, highlighting her work on pre-metallation strategies and the development of multilayer cells. Currently an Associate Researcher at CIC energiGUNE, Dr. Arnaiz focuses on metal-ion capacitors within the Electrochemical Storage Area. Her career at CIC energiGUNE began in 2015 as a summer student and has since evolved through various roles, including her PhD on lithium and sodium ion capacitors. Her research now centers on scaling metal-ion capacitor technology, from electrode processing to cell optimization.

In addition to her research contributions, Dr. Arnaiz actively participates in national, European, and industrial projects aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. She is also involved in STEAM activities to inspire future female scientists. The POLiS Excellence Cluster, which investigates sustainable battery materials and technologies, explores alternatives to lithium by focusing on batteries based on sodium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminium ions. These post-lithium batteries offer increased energy storage capacity, improved safety, and cost-effectiveness for various applications, such as stationary and mobile electrochemical storage.
