GAIKER Unveils Innovative Hybrid Materials for the Advancement of Space Industry

The HIPERION initiative aims to enhance and foster research in the field of space technology and science.

Space technology and science drive economic and technological development. The HIPERION project by GAIKER Technology Centre promotes research in space technology to enhance the positioning of companies in the Basque Autonomous Community. It focuses on developing lightweight materials with superior fatigue and impact resistance to replace metallic materials.

The project has achieved significant progress with Fiber-Metal Laminates (FMLs), hybrid composites of carbon and aluminum prepreg in a metal-composite-metal structure. Treatments like anodization and acid treatment have improved layer adhesion, yielding promising results.

FMLs are manufactured via energy-efficient vacuum forming, preserving their properties at extreme temperatures (-175ºC – 200ºC). Rigorous testing ensures compliance with the European Space Agency (ESA) requirements, with the goal of replacing metallic materials.

HIPERION, funded by the Basque Government, drives space research as the inaugural project within the ELKARTEK program.

GAIKER presenta materiales híbridos innovadores para el avance de la industria espacial

La iniciativa HIPERION pretende potenciar y fomentar la investigación en el campo de la tecnología y la ciencia espaciales.

La tecnología y la ciencia espaciales impulsan el desarrollo económico y tecnológico. El proyecto HIPERION del Centro Tecnológico GAIKER promueve la investigación en tecnología espacial para mejorar el posicionamiento de las empresas de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca. Se centra en el desarrollo de materiales ligeros con mayor resistencia a la fatiga y al impacto para sustituir a los materiales metálicos.

El proyecto ha logrado avances significativos con los Laminados Fibra-Metal (FML), compuestos híbridos de carbono y aluminio preimpregnados en una estructura metal-composite-metal. Tratamientos como la anodización y la acidificación han mejorado la adherencia de las capas, con resultados prometedores.

Los FML se fabrican mediante conformado al vacío de bajo consumo energético, preservando sus propiedades a temperaturas extremas (-175ºC – 200ºC). Unas pruebas rigurosas garantizan el cumplimiento de los requisitos de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA), con el objetivo de sustituir a los materiales metálicos.

HIPERION, financiado por el Gobierno Vasco, impulsa la investigación espacial como proyecto inaugural dentro del programa ELKARTEK.
