Supercomputing in Industry and its importance

“Supercomputing, data spaces and quantum computing are boosting an industrial transformation”

TECNALIA has seen how supercomputing, supported by data infrastructure and emerging technologies such as quantum computing, is transforming industry. TECNALIA is, therefore, committed to spearheading the development and implementation of supercomputing in strategic sectors, as part of an effort to build a secure and sustainable digital future.

Supercomputing, together with data spaces and quantum computing, is helping transform the way businesses operate, make decisions and address the challenges of reindustrialisation. These technologies make it possible to process large volumes of data, perform complex simulations and develop innovative solutions that improve efficiency, process quality and cybersecurity in critical sectors such as automotive and aeronautics.

A forward-looking event

An event held at TECNALIA’s site in Derio, entitled “The role of artificial intelligence, data spaces and supercomputing when facing the challenge of reindustrialisation”, brought together technology experts and industry leaders to explore the future of reindustrialisation in the age of digitisation.

The Director of Industry and Mobility, David Sánchez, opened the event by highlighting the importance of innovation and digitalisation to remain competitive in an ever-changing world.

Sánchez highlighted that companies must be attractive, adaptable and secure to thrive in this new environment. In addition, he mentioned three key parameters for a sustainable competitive advantage:

  • Technological sovereignty: mastering the “technological cores” that differentiate each company.
  • Joint innovation: the entire value chain (from the factory to the cloud) evolves in unison.
  • Cyber resilience: hedge innovation risks with agile solutions, especially in environments where cybersecurity is critical.

KATEA infrastructure: a cross-cutting axis

Joseba Laka, Digital Director, explained how TECNALIA’s KATEA platform, a supercomputing infrastructure, is a pillar for digital transformation. KATEA not only processes big data, but also enables the management of secure data spaces and the integration of technologies such as quantum computing, which are essential for solving complex problems in sectors such as energy or biotechnology.

Artzai Picón and Aitzol Zubizarreta presented the success story of BASF, where supercomputing, combined with collaborative data spaces, has optimised chemical processes and, consequently, reduced costs and improved quality. An example of how the union between IT and industry generates tangible value.

Round tables: dialogue between factories and technologies

At the first round table, which focused on the automotive sector, the leaders of Gestamp and Antolinhighlighted how digital technologies, including supercomputing, enable companies to remain competitive.

  • Lorena Gil, of Antolin, highlighted that “digitalisation is the key driving force for improving efficiency and quality in industrial processes”.
  • Diego Mallada, of Gestamp, talked about the need to adopt these technologies to face the challenges of the sector.
  • CTO of Dell Technologies, Julio Gómez, also highlighted Dell’s role as a strategic partner: “Collaboration between industrial companies and IT providers, such as Dell, is critical in order to building secure, scalable infrastructure that supports reindustrialisation”. The presence of Dell at this round table symbolises the integration between the world of manufacturing and technology, where cybersecurityand data management are essential.

At the second round table, which focused on aeronautics, the speakers addressed how supercomputing improves safety and efficiency in structural and aerodynamic simulations.

  • Sergio Lobo, of Aernnova, highlighted that “supercomputing allows complex phenomena to be analysed in real time, and this reduces risks and improves safety”.
  • Jesús Contreras, of ITP Aero, pointed out the relevance of quantum computing for developing more accurate models.
