The UPV/EHU professor joins the select group of experts recognised by the prestigious scientific society.
Professor Antonio Gómez Muñoz, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UPV/EHU’s Faculty of Science and Technology, has been distinguished as an Honorary Member of the Sphingolipid Club (SLC), the oldest European society devoted to sphingolipid research. Founded in 2001 in Italy, this organisation has a select group of honorary members, including Professor Gómez Muñoz.
Professor Gómez Muñoz has been a member of the SLC Scientific Committee since 2005, actively contributing to various initiatives. His contributions include chairing and leading numerous international scientific sessions, giving lectures at international conferences and organising relevant events, such as the VII International Congress of the Sphingolipid Club in Bilbao in 2007 and the 51st International Congress of Lipid Bioscience (ICBL) in the same city in 2010.
In addition to his recent appointment to the SLC, in February 2024 Professor Gómez Muñoz was recognised as a full member of Sigma XI, the oldest and most relevant International Honorary Society for Scientific Research, which brings together scientists and engineers from all over the world. This society, founded in 1886 in the United States, counts among its members more than 200 Nobel laureates, including prominent figures such as Watson, Crick and Einstein.
Professor Gómez Muñoz’s academic and professional career is extensive and outstanding. With a PhD in Biological Sciences from the UPV/EHU, he has carried out his research work in internationally renowned institutions in the United Kingdom, Canada and Spain. His research focuses on the regulation of inflammatory and tumour processes by biologically active lipids, and he is a pioneer in the study of bioactive sphingolipids such as ceramides and sphingosine. He has more than 100 scientific publications and is on Stanford University’s list of the most influential scientists in the world.
