«The Sonic Success of Team BiSKY: HERMES Breaks the Sound Barrier in a Historic Achievement»

Publicada el enero 25, 2024mayo 20, 2024 por Estíbaliz Pérez de la Torre

The BiSKY Team team, belonging to the Bilbao School of Engineering, has achieved a significant milestone in breaking the sound barrier with the successful launch of their HERMES rocket at the military base in Zaragoza last December. This achievement marks a before and after in the history of the UPV/EHU team (Basque Public University) and represents a crucial step in the validation of several components developed internally. Despite a failure in the recovery module that caused the early completion of the flight after reaching supersonic speed, the team believes that most of the mission’s objectives have been met.

During HERMES’ flight, which maintained stability from launch to supersonic speed, the effectiveness of passive control elements was demonstrated. Despite the incident, the navigation and data collection systems worked properly, providing crucial information for modeling and validating the rocket’s behavior. This valuable information will enable the team to improve designs and address future challenges. The next step for BiSKY Team involves the implementation of these improvements in its ATLAS rocket, a high-speed test platform for the validation of subsystems in flight.

Bisky Team, which emerged in the course of 2017-2018, has experienced significant growth, having launched eight rockets on ten occasions and manufactured three own engines. The last year has been successful, with two successful rocket launches and advances in the development of a third prototype hybrid rocket engine. This growth is attributed to the boom of the aerospace sector, providing the team with a bridge into this industry through sponsors. With 68 students spread over six subgroups, BiSKY Team specializes in key areas such as propulsion, aerodynamics, structure, aviation, control and simulation, and business & management.

BISKY-Team
