One hundred and sixty-two people from the University of the Basque Country, among the most influential in the world of science

Publicada el noviembre 8, 2024noviembre 8, 2024 por Hugo Fernandez de la Pradilla

Stanford University ranking selects the top 2% group of researchers most cited in scientific publications.

There are 162 researchers at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in the chosen group of the 2% with the highest number of citations in scientific publications: of these, 119 (103 in 2023) are on the senior list (which refers to the citations received throughout their professional career by the researcher); 133 (141 in 2023) are on the list corresponding to the last year (which includes the citations obtained, in this case, during 2023) and 95 on both lists. This is according to the latest edition of the Ranking of the World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientists, published by Stanford University.

In view of these data, the rector of the UPV/EHU, Eva Ferreira, has declared: ‘the Stanford University ranking certifies the excellence of the research carried out at the Basque public university and consolidates, on an international level, its image as a generalist university that creates cutting-edge knowledge in a wide range of scientific fields. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the researchers who are part of this select group of scientific influence and to stress the importance of this news, which reinforces the prestige of the Basque university in the eyes of Basque society’.

The people from the UPV/EHU who stand out in the ranking work in more than 40 different areas of knowledge, which shows the richness and diversity of the research carried out at the Basque public university. These include: Neurology and Neurosurgery, Chemical Physics, Polymers, Neurosciences, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Applied Physics, Sports Science, Experimental Psychology, Languages and Linguistics, Chemical Engineering, General Physics, Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, Industrial Engineering and Automation, Analytical Chemistry, Mathematics, Food Science, Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Medicine, Oncology and Carcinogenesis, Microbiology, Odontology, Materials, Energy, Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing.

The ranking prepared by the prestigious Stanford University identifies those researchers whose work has been most cited during their scientific career, evaluated between 1996-2023. It also compiles a list of the most cited people during the last year 2023.

The top ten UPV/EHU graduates in the senior list are:

  • Verkhratsky, Alexei (Neurology and Neurosurgery).
  • Grabowski, Sławomir J. (Chemical Physics)
  • Mecerreyes, David (Polymers)
  • Asua, José M. (Polymers)
  • Matute, Carlos (Neurosciences)
  • Mujika, Iñigo (Sports Science)
  • Goñi, Félix M. (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology)
  • Cenoz, Jasone (Languages and Linguistics)
  • Carreiras, Manuel (Psycholinguistics)
  • Pérez-Ruiz, Fernando (Medicine)

Around 200,000 people at the forefront of science out of more than 10 million working in academic and research institutions around the world appear in the ranking, representing 2% of the world’s most prestigious researchers.
