The initiative will explore whether there are conditions for life on the planet Jupiter and its satellites. (Autor: Ainhoa López-Abadía Urresti)

Ricardo Hueso and Agustín Sánchez Lavega, researchers of the UPV/EHU’s Planetary Sciences Group, are participating in the JUICE mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). This mission aims to explore the icy moons of Jupiter, such as Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, which are believed to harbor oceans of water beneath their icy surface. Hueso and Sánchez Lavega are co-investigators on the JANUS and MAJIS instruments, respectively, and are focused on studying the atmosphere of the planet Jupiter.

The JUICE mission was launched in April and will follow a complex trajectory that includes flybys of Venus and Earth before reaching Jupiter in 2031. For approximately three and a half years, the spacecraft will conduct exploration flybys and collect data on Jupiter and its moons before entering orbit around Ganymede in 2035.

The discovery of subsurface liquid water oceans on these moons would open new perspectives in the search for life and in astrobiological exploration. Researchers will use the JANUS and MAJIS instruments to study the chemical composition of the moons’ surfaces and atmospheres, as well as to analyze Jupiter’s atmosphere and its cloudy and dynamic characteristics.

With the duration and complexity of the mission, it is expected that more young researchers will join the Planetary Science Group and that new scientific contributions will be made to the field of study.
