LUP is a Basque startup focused on developing technological solutions that improve access to reading for people with low vision or reading difficulties. Originating within Mondragon University, the company combines artificial intelligence, computer vision, and optical character recognition (OCR) to create a device capable of transforming printed text into audio within seconds, without requiring internet access or advanced technological knowledge.
The initiative was created with the objective of using technology to address social challenges and enhance autonomy for visually impaired users. Its system enables users to read everyday documents, labels, letters, and other printed materials through a simple and intuitive experience, helping improve independence and quality of life.
One of the company’s key achievements has been the integration of physical devices with digital solutions, creating a broader accessibility ecosystem. LUP currently collaborates with optical stores, libraries, day-care centers, and organizations working with elderly people and individuals with visual impairments. The startup has already been implemented in more than 90 public libraries and over 250 optical stores across Spain, validating both the usefulness and scalability of its technology.
The company has also participated in entrepreneurship and innovation support programmes such as SPRI Group’s Ekintzaile initiative and is currently part of the Lanzadera acceleration programme. Looking ahead, LUP aims to further improve its technology, develop new digital solutions, and expand internationally. To support this growth strategy, the company is currently undertaking a €475,000 investment round to strengthen its technological capabilities and accelerate commercial expansion.
